Ioannina has indeed a large and important Jewish history. Before WWII it was the biggest Romaniote* Jewish community of Greece, existing at least from the early Middle Ages. Visiting the city one can still see the beautiful Synagogue, the Holocaust Memorial and the Jewish Quarter, which is one of the most attractive neighborhoods of Ioannina today. Many Jews of Ioannina live in Athens and New York following the Romaniote tradition.

  • Romaniotes are Jews that have been living in the Greek-speaking world from the 4th century BCE or even earlier. The ancient Jewish communities of the Greco-Roman world became larger during the Byzantine times and some of them have survived until the present day.
